Amazon Games has signed an agreement with Crystal Dynamics to support the development and publishing of the next major Tomb Raider game, developed in Unreal Engine 5.
The companies said today, Dec. 15, that they “have come to an agreement for Crystal Dynamics to develop a new multi-platform Tomb Raider title, with Amazon Games providing full support and global distribution of the game.”
The game in question is the next generation Tomb Raider Announced in April 2022🇧🇷 Crystal dynamics, was purchased by Embracer Group in Augustnoted that the acquisition allowed for more non-traditional publishing deals, such as the one with Amazon.
“Following the acquisition of Crystal Dynamics by Embracer, there is an extraordinary opportunity to redefine what the publishing relationship is for Tomb Raider,” said Scot Amos, head of Crystal Dynamics.
“Transformative is what we’re looking for, and with Amazon Games, we’ve found a team that shares our creative vision, ambitions, and values for the Lara Croft universe across the spectrum. They’re uniquely positioned to rewrite what we’ve had in publishing and development collaborations, and we’re looking forward to the biggest and best Tomb Raider yet.” We look forward to continuing this new path together, starting with building the Raider game.”
A relatively vague description of the new game was also shared, although it seems to be largely in line with what players have come to expect from Crystal Dynamics’ next game. “The new, as-yet-untitled Tomb Raider game is a single-player, narrative-driven adventure that continues the story of Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider series.
“It incorporates all the elements that make Tomb Raider one of the most revered franchises in gaming, rewarding players for exploration and creative pathfinding, controlling a confident and multi-dimensional heroine Lara Croft with mind-bending puzzles to solve, and a wide variety of enemies to face and eliminate.
“Crystal Dynamics leverages the power and cutting-edge technology of Unreal Engine 5 to take storytelling to the next level in the biggest, most expansive Tomb Raider game to date. The title is currently in early development, with additional details to be announced at a later date.”
Not much else has been said about the game, and given that it’s still in early development, it’ll be a while before Crystal Dynamics, Embracer, or Amazon Games share more.
