Now, Angstronomics has revealed information such as die sizes, GPU configurations and specifications that could end up in the final retail products. An interesting announcement was made by the tech outlet, which revealed that configurations for the Navi 3X GPUs were first drawn up in 2019 and later finalized in 2020. GPUs, this means that either AMD has really made changes since their last designs, or the rumors were simply untrue. With that said, let’s see what configurations we can expect with the Navi 3x “RDNA 3” GPU set.
Oh, my God confirmed RDNA 3 GPUs will arrive later this year with a big performance boost. The company’s Senior Vice President of Engineering, Radeon Technologies, David Wang, said that the next-generation GPUs for the Radeon RX 7000 series will offer more than 50% performance per watt increase compared to the existing RDNA 2 GPUs. Some of the key features of the RDNA 3 GPUs highlighted by AMD include:
- 5nm process node
- Advanced Chiplet Packaging
- Rebuilt computing unit
- Optimized Graphics Pipeline
- Next generation AMD Infinity Cache
- >50% Perf/Watt compared to RDNA 2
Gamers should expect fluid 4K gaming to be buttery smooth on these graphics cards, and with the FidelityFX suite offering next-gen FSR, SAS and SAM support, we could even see 60 FPS playable at 8K resolution.
AMD Navi 31 “Plum Bonito” GPU Configuration
The AMD Navi 31 GPU with the flagship RDNA 3 chip will power next-generation enthusiast cards like the Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card. We’ve heard that AMD will drop CUs (Compute Units) in favor of WGPs (Workgroup Processors) in its next-gen RDNA 3 GPUs. Each WGP will host dual CUs (Compute Units), but within the RDNA 2, each CU will have twice as many SIMD32 clusters as opposed to just 2. AMD is rumored to have a choice between Samsung and TSMC for the 6nm die.
- AMD Navi 31: 12288 cores, 384-bit bus, 192 MB Infinity cache, 308mm2 GPU @5nm
- AMD Navi 21: 5120 cores, 384-bit bus, 128 MB Infinity cache, 520 mm2 GPU @ 7nm
according to latest information, the AMD Navi 31 GPU with RDNA 3 architecture is expected to offer a single GCD with 48 WGPs, 12 SAs and 6 SEs. This would give a total of 12,288 SPs or stream processors. This is a 2.4x increase in colors compared to the 5120 SP displayed on the Navi 21 GPU. The GPU or Navi 31 GCD is said to measure 308mmtwo and will be packaged on TSMC’s 5nm process node.

The Navi 31 GPU will also carry 6 MCDs, which will carry 16 MB of Infinity Cache per die, as well as 64-bit (32-bit x 2) memory controllers, which will provide the chip with a 384-bit bus interface. While that equates to 96MB of Infinity Cache, down from the 128MB featured on current Navi 21 GPUs, there’s also a 3D-Stacked solution in the works. recently highlighted and this will double the Infinity Cache to 32MB (16MB 0-hi + 16MB 1-hi) for a total of 192MB cache. This is a 50% increase over the current Navi 21 design and also makes the Navi 31 the first GPU with both chiplet and 3D stacked designs. These chiplets, or MCDs, will be manufactured on TSMC’s 6nm process node and will measure 37.5mm in size.two each.
The publication reports that a higher MCD package of 288 MB (16 MB 0-Hi + 16 MB 1-Hi + 16 MB 2-Hi) was planned, but this was canceled due to cost-benefit reasons. There is also talk of a scaled-down version of the Navi 31 GPU, which will have 42 WGP or 10,752 cores and 5 MCDs for 80MB of Infinity Cache over a 320-bit bus interface.

Now, this would result in a higher power draw, and AMD seems to have it confirmed so much so that their next-gen lineup of graphics cards will have higher power consumption, but they’ll still be a more efficient option than what NVIDIA has to offer. AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT now has 335W TBP, so for a >2x performance increase. The cards are expected to retain the dual 8-pin input plug for power and feature an updated three-fan cooling design that is slightly taller than the one currently in use.
AMD Navi 32 “Wheat Nas” GPU Configuration
The AMD Navi 32 GPU, codenamed “Wheat Nas”, is also one of two MCM GPUs featured in the RDNA 3 series. The GPU will feature a single GCD (Graphics Compute Dies) and four MCDs (Multi-Cache Dies). The GPU or GCD is said to measure 200mmtwo each MCD will remain the same size at 37.5mmtwo.
- AMD Navi 32: 7680 Cores, 256-bit Bus, 64MB Infinity Cache, 200mm2 GPU Die @5nm
- AMD Navi 22: 2560 Cores, 192-bit Bus, 96MB Infinity Cache, 335mm2 GPU Die @7nm

GCD will be powered by 3 Shader Engines and each Shader Engine has 6 Shader Arrays (18 in total). The GPU will have a total of 30 WGPs or 60 Compute Units for 7680 cores. This means up to >50% more colors than the flagship Navi 31.
Each MCD must also have 2 memory connections (32 bits). That’s a total of 8 32-bit memory controllers for a 256-bit bus interface. Each MCD will hold 16MB of 0-Hi capacity, but no 1-Hi options are in sight, meaning the chip will only have 64MB maximum configurations. That Navi 32 GPU is said to launch in 2023 and will be the top-end chip for mobile phones and the mid-range chip for desktops. The GPU will be brought to the mobile segment first and could be announced at CES 2023, which makes ideal sense as our Zen 4-core Phoenix Range and Dragon Range laptops will be ready by then.
AMD Navi 32 “Hotpink Bonefish” GPU Configuration
Codenamed “Hotpink Bonefish”, the AMD Navi 33 GPU will launch a monolithic segment within the RDNA 3 family. The GPU will have a single matrix. The die is very similar to the flagship Navi 21 GPU and is expected to use a 6nm process node for manufacturing with a die size of 203mm.two.
- AMD Navi 33: 4096 cores, 128-bit bus, 32 MB Infinity cache, 335 mm2 GPU 6nm @ Die
- AMD Navi 23: 2048 cores, 128-bit bus, 32MB Infinity cache, 237mm2 GPU Die @7nm

Navi 33 GCD is expected to have 2 Shader Engines and each Shader Engine has 2 Shader Arrays (2 for each SE/4 in total). That rounds up to 16 WGP or 32 Compute Units for a total of 4,096 cores, higher than the Radeon RX 6800 “Navi 21 XL” GPU. The GPU will pack 32MB of Infinity Cache, the same amount as the Navi 23 GPU, and a 128-bit wide bus. Like the Navi 32 GPUs, the Navi 33 chips will be primarily focused on the mobile lineup with their primary graphics performance, putting them ahead of Intel’s Arc Alchemist lineup at less than half the price and using less power.
The leak also talks about two new features coming to AMD RDNA 3 Navi 3x GPUs for Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards:
One feature in the RDNA 3 graphics pipeline is OREO: Opaque Random Export Order, which is just one of many space-saving techniques. With Gfx10, the pixel shaders are out of order, where the outputs go into the Reorder Buffer before going to the rest of the pipeline in order. With OREO, the next step (mix) can now receive and execute transactions in any order and export them to the next step by order. Thus, the ROB can be replaced with a smaller sliding buffer that saves space.
Each of the Memory Attached Last Level (MALL) cache blocks is halved and doubles the number of banks for the same amount of cache. There are also tweaks and additions that boost graphics to MALL bandwidth and reduce the VRAM penalty.
Based on the Nav 3x GPUs, the AMD Radeon RX 7000 “RDNA 3” GPU suite is expected to follow the launch of the flagship Navi 31 later this year, followed by the Navi 32 and Navi 33 GPUs.
