NEW DELHI: India is all set to manufacture Apple’s flagship iPhone 14 with the company confirming that the smartphones will be manufactured in India at contract manufacturer Foxconn’s factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
This would be perhaps the fastest scale expansion that Apple has ever initiated at a manufacturing facility in India, and the latest iPhone was produced here just weeks after its global launch on September 7.
When contacted, the company confirmed the development. “The new iPhone 14 series offers innovative technologies and important security features. We are excited to manufacture the device in India,” Apple said in a statement to TOI.
Sources said that the Indian-made devices will not only be sold domestically but will also be exported to global markets. However, manufacturing in India does not mean lower prices for the devices.
Apple currently has the top 3 global manufacturing partners manufacturing smartphones in India. These are Wistron, Foxconn and Pegatron.
The company started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017 with the iPhoneSE. Currently, Apple also manufactures iPhone SE, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 in India. All three players enjoy production benefits provided as part of the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
The increased employment in India comes at a time when the company is looking outside of China for strong manufacturing operations. Most of the company’s production is in China, and it is estimated that Apple buys 95% of its products from the Land of Dragons.
The Indian government is understood to have asked the American electronics giant to generate $50 billion worth of annual manufacturing output domestically over five to six years and expand domestically produced cat products beyond iPhones to include Macbooks, iPads, Air Pods and watches.
Apple is exploring the Make in India program for other products, but so far it has only invested in iPhones. Apple is believed to have earned more than $3. 5 billion in India in the fiscal year ending September 2021, although a large part of this turnover is mainly due to imports from China and products not manufactured in the country. Sales of made-in-India products will be low right now, prompting the government to push the company to deepen its manufacturing commitment in India.
Manufacturing potential looks bright for India. In the fiscal year ending September 2021, Apple’s global revenue was $365 billion, of which $191 billion came from iPhones and about $67 billion from Macbooks and iPads. Wearables like Air Pods and watches accounted for another $38 billion.
