California's electric vehicle mandate could spread to more than a dozen states

More than a dozen states are debating whether to adopt California’s plan to ban new gas-powered vehicles by 2035.

Several of the 17 states will advance the plan, including Washington, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon and Vermont. California restrictions It’s the strictest in the country, requiring all new vehicles to run on electricity or hydrogen by 2035.

The mandate is facing fierce pushback in states like Minnesota, where the Minnesota Automobile Dealers Association argues that weather conditions prohibit the use of electric-only vehicles.

“The technology is such that cars don’t perform as well in cold weather,” trade group president Scott Lambert told The Associated Press. “We don’t all live in Southern California.”

Colorado is among the states where the measure faces stiff opposition.

“While the governor shares the goal of a rapid transition to electric vehicles, he is skeptical of requiring 100% of vehicles sold by a certain date to be electric because technology is changing so quickly,” the Colorado Office of Energy told the AP.

Meanwhile, Republicans in Virginia are trying cut themselves off from California standards. In 2021, when Democrats controlled the legislature and the governor’s office, the state passed legislation subject to California standards.

Republican Governor of Virginia. Glenn Youngkin last week called the law “ridiculous” and directed his administration to cut ties.

“With an effort Turn Virginia into California The liberal politicians who previously ran our government sold out the state of Virginia by subjecting Virginia drivers to California vehicle laws,” Youngkin wrote on Twitter. “Now, because of this pact, Virginians will be forced to accept a California law banning the sale of gas. and diesel cars”.
