Hurricane Ian: Waves flood roads in Key West as storm strengthens to Category 4

After spending most of Thursday as a tropical storm, Ian re-increased into a hurricane as it took aim at the South Carolina coastline.

The National Hurricane Center said in its 5:00 PM ET update that Hurricane Ian is “targeting the Carolinas and Georgia with life-threatening flooding, storm surge and strong winds.”

The hurricane is now moving north-northwest at 10 mph, with maximum sustained winds increasing to 75 mph with gusts.

“Ian may strengthen slightly before making landfall tomorrow and is forecast to weaken rapidly over the southeastern United States Friday through Saturday,” the advisory said.

Dozens of rescue operations are underway in Florida after unprecedented flooding from one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the United States.

Thousands of people were stranded across the state as coast guard helicopters were seen pulling people from rooftops after meters of water splashed into neighboring areas. Currently, 2.5 million people are left without electricity.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis described the storm as a “500-year flood event” and said major infrastructure was severely damaged, including Sanibel Avenue in southwest Florida and the bridge to Pine Island near Fort Myers.

President Joe Biden declared a major disaster in Florida after the catastrophic effects. “This could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida history,” he said during a briefing at Federal Emergency Management Agency headquarters.
