Kickstarter Canceled In The Brutally Honest Way Possible

Mystery Flesh Pit National Park is a fictional project by Trevor Roberts, Beginners on Reddit has been in the last few years posts stories and artwork on his siteThe tale of a giant creature discovered underground in Texas and turned into a… tourist attraction (sorry).

It’s a very cool pitch, kind of Lovecraftian Jurassic parkIt was absurd and full of hideous horror and slowly gather enough fans that was is highlighted on sites such as USA Today🇧🇷 Considering the success of the project and Roberts building a more detailed diorama of the world rather than the line the storya video game adaptation must have seemed like a really good idea to a lot of people.

So last week Roberts announced that Courtesy of Village Fox Mediaa Mystery Flesh Pit video game will be in development, and would seek funding for it on Kickstarter🇧🇷 Billed as a “survival horror video game for PC”, the game will focus on the efforts of a crew tasked with helping the Park recover from a disaster. inside a huge beast– this leads to the death of 750 people.

A week later, the Kickstarter, which had focused too much on demos or development details, was canceled, a decision Roberts said was made after a combination of “fan feedback, misguided marketing pushes, internal arguments and some deep introspection.” . Specifically, apparently the process of handing off work on the game to other people… didn’t go over well with Roberts. since writing (emphasis mine):

Apologies to those who are looking forward to the video game. Most people don’t fully understand how important a task it is to create even a simple video game. I personally and carefully created each piece Mystery Flesh Pit project, but something as big as a video game is completely out of my scope as an individual artist. While I am not directly responsible for its creation, I cannot guarantee its quality. After this experience, I can definitely say that there will be no confirmed video game adaptations Mystery Flesh Pit as long as I’m alive.

I hope that by canceling this overly ambitious Kickstarter campaign, I’ve avoided what could have been a rushed and inferior gaming experience at best, and an unmitigated disaster at worst.🇧🇷 I also hope that my decision to support this particular Kickstarter doesn’t hurt or hinder the excellent work of the other credible, talented creators who are behind the scenes and working to bring you the Mystery Flesh Pit Tabletop Gaming Experience. In 2023.

“I have no hard feelings toward the developers,” Roberts tells me. “Ultimately, it was a mutual decision to cancel it. I think they were a little too ambitious and I could see it turning out to be a disaster for everyone involved. I think I did the right thing. For the record, I have always fully supported and continue to support fan games. I have only one statement about it not being there Mystery Flesh Pit video game was, admittedly, a little overzealous. Fan games are awesome. I just think there are already too many games/movies/series that are poorly planned by burnt out creators and I’m not about that.”

IIt’s refreshing to see Roberts seeing the writing on the wall and pulling the plug now, not months/years down the road and already taking the money – like so many other doomed campaigns on the platform.

Desktop adaptationIt’s still coming, as Roberts said, it should be out early next year.
