It’s been a tougher day for American airline passengers, to put it mildly.

If your flight is canceled and you choose not to travel on the new route, the Department for Transport requires your airline to refund you, even if you bought a non-refundable ticket.
In the case of latency, the rules are a bit more fuzzy. The DOT says passengers are entitled to compensation if a “substantial” delay occurs, but the department has not yet defined what constitutes a “substantial” delay.
