The Orionids meteor shower is considered one of the most beautiful showers of the year and is expected to peak during the coming week.
According to NASA, the Orionids meteor shower will peak in October. 21 offers sky watchers a show that will light up the night sky.
Depending on where you are in the Northern Hemisphere, you may see up to 15 meteors per hour at peak times.
Some of these Orionids can leave glowing “trains” (incandescent pieces of debris trailing a meteor) that can last up to several minutes, and some faster meteors can also turn into fireballs, NASA says.

The Orionid meteors are fragments of Halley’s Comet and are framed by some of the brightest stars in the night sky.
“Each time Halley returns to the inner Solar System, its core spews ice and rocky dust into space. If the dust particles collide with Earth’s atmosphere, they eventually become the Orionids in October and the Eta Aquarids in May,” NASA said.

Since the moon is not expected to dull the display during the peak of the shower, scientists say the backdrop for the Orionids will be spectacular.
The biggest weather advantage you could ask for is the open sky.
The second most important viewing condition you want is a dark sky away from light pollution. If you live in a big city, consider going to a state or national park that allows overnight camping. But even if you can go outside where you live, let your eyes adjust to the dark for a few minutes and then look up. This includes putting down your phone.
